Dear P.S. 273 Families,
Welcome to a brand-new school year at Wortman Elementary! 🎉 I am filled with excitement as we begin this journey together. Each new year brings fresh opportunities—for learning, for growth, and for building strong connections with our families and community.
At P.S. 273, we believe every child has a bright future waiting to unfold. This year, we are committed to providing a nurturing and challenging environment where all students can thrive. Together—with your partnership, dedication, and encouragement—we will empower our scholars to dream big and reach their fullest potential.
I am honored to serve as your principal and to work alongside such talented educators, wonderful families, and, most importantly, our amazing students. Let’s make this year one filled with discovery, joy, and success. 💛
Here’s to an incredible year ahead!
With great excitement,
Ms. Melessa Avery
Principal, P.S. 273
We are so excited to welcome you and your little one to the P.S. 273 family! 💛 This is the beginning of a joyful learning adventure filled with discovery, play, and growth.
In Pre-K, every day is a chance to explore—whether it’s building with blocks, painting masterpieces, singing songs, or making new friends. Your child will laugh, learn, and shine in ways that will amaze you! 🌟

Governor Hochul: “Well, one thing that's going to be a little different for you, too, is that this is the first time that you'll not have cell phones in your possession during the school day. Now we're doing this because we want to make sure that you can keep learning and in a distraction-free environment … You are going to be smarter because you'll be paying attention more in school. Your teachers will have a better experience teaching you and making connections with you.”
Hochul: “I've got a friend here, one of my best friends who I want you to get to know. Frankie Focus, he's introduced here today for the very first time. He doesn't say a lot, he's kind of quiet … But he is very focused on learning in school, focused on the teachers, focused on making friends.”
Principal Melessa Avery welcomes the school community to the new year and shares an update on the DOE’s new cell phone policy.
Contacting Your Child: If you need to reach your child during the day: • Email our Parent Coordinator, Ms. Torres-Perez, at JTorresperez@schools.nyc.gov. • You will receive a confirmation reply: “received.” • Call her NYCPS cellphone at (929) 790-2611 • If you’re unable to reach her, please call the school’s main office at (718) 649-5740
